History
In April 1982, Key West seceded from the United States, in protest of a Border Patrol blockade of U.S. 1, effectively cutting off Key West's tourist traffic and strangling the local economy. As is befitting the local pirate culture, they declared their independence and declared war. They eventually returned to the United States, but there's still a spirit of rebelliousness that permeates the culture of Key West.
